When you want to order meat, ask it well done. Cooking food at high temperature can kill bacteria. When it comes to seafood, there is a greater chance that it is cooked in low temperature, not enough to kill the harmful bacteria. Before eating shellfish, ask its source and the time exposed outside and without a cover. It is better to buy packed nuts or raisins from supermarkets for snacks, than eating sandwiches with raw vegetables. It is always safe to drink and eat pasteurized dairy because even non-pasteurized dairy products like cheese and yogurt easily spoil. One of the causes of diarrhea is unpurified water.
Only drink bottled water and if you are ordering it from a restaurant, ask the waiter to bring the unopened bottle to you. Do not use tap water from the local area, but if there is no other source of water, boil the water for at least 10 minutes. Try to use bottled water for brushing your teeth, washing fruits and even for ice. This is especially important if you are in a rural area. Do not let the danger of diarrhea or any food borne illness prevent you from enjoying the culture and food when traveling abroad. It is best to bring some medicines if you fell ill. It is better to be aware of potential risks and danger so you can take precautionary measures and you will have a nice but safe trip.
